AEO for healthcare organizations, built on medical review and E-E-A-T

AEO for healthcare is the discipline of making accurate, clinically reviewed content the version that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini draw on when patients and caregivers ask health questions. We work with marketing leads at hospital groups, multi-site clinics, digital health companies, and pharma and medical device brands. The work is governed like any other regulated content: a named medical reviewer, a review date, a compliance sign-off where needed, and tracking that never touches patient data.

Quick answer

How can a healthcare organization show up accurately in AI health answers?

AEO for healthcare starts with condition and treatment pages that answer common questions directly, carry a named clinical reviewer and review date, and cite primary guidance. Provider directories and location pages need consistent names, credentials and addresses. Allow search crawlers, keep tracking free of patient data, and monitor a fixed set of health prompts monthly for accuracy.

  • Health content is YMYL, so answer engines lean on sources with visible expertise and review.
  • Every page we touch carries a named clinical reviewer and a last-reviewed date.
  • Prompt tracking and analytics are kept free of protected health information.
  • Pharma content keeps fair balance and goes through your regulatory review before publishing.

01

Why is AEO for healthcare held to a higher standard?

Because a wrong answer can hurt someone. Google treats health topics as Your Money or Your Life content, where experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) carry the most weight, and answer engines face the same pressure to quote sources that look clinically credible.

The demand is large. OpenAI says more than 230 million people ask ChatGPT health and wellness questions every week. BrightEdge found healthcare has the highest overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings of any sector it studied, at 24%, which suggests that strong conventional search work still pays off here more than in most industries.

02

What should a condition or treatment page look like to be quoted?

It should answer the question in its first two sentences and then earn trust in everything that follows. Patients ask assistants things like "what are the early signs of shingles" or "how long is recovery after a knee replacement", and the answer has to be clear, correct and bounded.

We structure condition and treatment pages around the questions your clinicians hear most, with a plain-language answer at the top of each section, a "when to see a doctor" note, and references to primary sources such as clinical guidelines. Each page shows the author, the medical reviewer with credentials and a last-reviewed date. Pages written without clinician input are not published, however tight the deadline.

  • Answer-first summaries written at a readable level for patients
  • Reviewer name, credentials and review date visible on the page
  • References to guidelines and peer-reviewed sources
  • Clear limits: what the page does not cover and when to seek care

03

How do provider directories and location pages feed AI answers?

They tell assistants who you are, where you are and who practices there. When someone asks for a pediatric cardiologist near them or which clinic in town offers sleep studies, the answer relies on consistent entity data more than on blog posts.

We check that each physician profile lists specialty, credentials, languages and locations the same way on your site, your Google Business Profile listings and the major provider directories you use. Organization and Physician schema with sameAs links connects those records. Location pages get hours, accepted insurance in text and the services offered at that site, rather than one generic page cloned across every branch.

04

How does AI search work fit within HIPAA marketing limits?

By keeping patient information out of every step. We never use real patient details in prompt testing, we review analytics and tracking tags on appointment and portal pages with your privacy team, and patient stories only appear when you hold the written authorization your compliance team requires.

Our prompt sets use generic questions, and our reporting uses aggregate referral data from GA4 and Search Console. Your compliance or legal team decides what can be published; we work inside their process rather than around it. This is not medical or legal advice, and your counsel should confirm how HIPAA applies to your marketing.

05

What changes for pharma and medical device brands?

The review process, mainly. Branded product content must keep fair balance between benefits and risks, include safety information, and stay within approved indications, and it passes through your medical, legal and regulatory review before anything goes live.

Our director Harsh Khubchandani began his career at ZS in pharma commercial operations, so we plan for that review cycle from the start. Much of the useful AEO work for pharma sits in unbranded disease education, HCP resources and accurate product information pages. We also monitor how assistants describe your products, and when an answer gets an indication or a safety point wrong, we trace which source it came from and decide with your team how to correct it.

06

Which crawler and tracking settings matter for health websites?

Allow the search crawlers, decide deliberately on training crawlers, and measure without patient data. Many health systems sit behind Cloudflare or strict web application firewalls that block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot by accident, and server logs show it quickly.

Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding but does not affect inclusion in Google Search, according to Google's crawler documentation, so blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews. Each month we run a health prompt set in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode, flag inaccurate answers for clinical review, and report AI referrals from chatgpt.com and similar sources alongside Search Console's generative AI report.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO for healthcare different from healthcare SEO?

It uses the same foundations, since Google says optimizing for AI search is still SEO. The extra work is in answer-first structure, entity consistency across provider directories, and monthly monitoring of what assistants actually say about your conditions, treatments and clinicians.

Do AI answers prefer medically reviewed content?

Answer engines do not publish their source rules, but health is YMYL content where Google weights expertise and trust most. A named clinical reviewer, credentials and a review date are visible trust signals that cost little to add.

Can we use patient testimonials in AEO content?

Only with the authorization your compliance team requires, and never with details that identify a patient without consent. This is not legal advice; check with your counsel how HIPAA and your state rules apply.

What can a pharma brand do when ChatGPT describes its drug wrongly?

Find the source the answer seems to draw on, correct or update your own product information pages, and make sure approved information is crawlable. Then track the same prompts monthly, because answers change over time and no one can force an immediate correction.

Should hospitals block AI crawlers?

Blocking search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from those answers, while blocking training tokens such as GPTBot or Google-Extended does not affect search inclusion. Many health systems allow search crawlers and decide on training access separately.

How do you track AI visibility without patient data?

We test generic health questions, never real patient details, and report aggregate referral traffic from GA4 and first-party data from Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. No protected health information enters our prompts or reports.
